Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg in 1958 and lived most of his life in British Columbia. Terry was a Canadian athlete, a humanitarian and cancer research activist. Despite have one leg amputated due to cancer, Terry embarked on an ambitious cross Canada east to west run with the goal of raising money and awareness for cancer research. This run is known as the Marathon of Hope. He was unable to complete the run as the cancer had spread. Terry had been awarded the Companion of the Order of Canada and Canadian of the Year. The Marathon of Hope continues each year and is organized by the Terry Fox Foundation.
May 2015 the Manitoba Government renamed our traditional Civic Holiday to Terry Fox Day and the second Sunday in September after Labour Day as Terry Fox Run Day.
